Alabama AFL-CIO Convention

The 1956 Alabama AFL-CIO Convention in Mobile. It was in 1956 that the separate Alabama AFL and CIO bodies merged, creating a stronger and more powerful state organization. Alabama was the first state to merge the two organizations following the national AFL and CIO merger in 1955.

In addition to the merger, other topics on the agenda were to increase jury pay, repeal the right to work law, amend unemployment compensation eligibility, campaign to increase awareness of the union label, amend the sales tax, and call for reapportionment of the state.
